Hackney Town Hall wins 2018 Civic Trust Award Commendation
turnerbates’ collaboration with Hawkins\Brown on the restoration and refurbishment of the Grade II Listed Hackney Town Hall recently won a 2018 Civic Trust Award Commendation. The building was finally finished in late 2017 after 12 years of complex refurbishment, allowing the Town Hall to remain open throughout.
Practical interventions by the team, such as a 66% increase in office space, are paired with careful restoration, modern-style fittings and a transformation of the service courtyards into spacious symmetrical atriums. The restoration embraces the art deco style, whilst providing a useable space for events.
The project brought the listed building back to life, and ‘has allowed for the sensitive introduction of new event venues with the capacity to generate future revenue’.
